This is the first post on our new blog. We are the American Women’s Club of Winnipeg. The club was incorporated in the Province of Manitoba in 1922. Because the club valued the congeniality of mind and purpose existing between the United States and Canada, it has always fostered the spirit of true harmony between itself and this, the land of our adoption. Deeming it a particular privilege to help philanthropically, its members have donated literally thousands of hours and dollars in the Winnipeg community to many worthy causes. We would like to stress we are not political and do not discuss any political matters. We have come together because of a common background and are here to grow alongside the wonderful city of Winnipeg.
Things have been really crazy so far this year with attempting to keep the club active during COVID-19. We had a zoom meeting in May with a guest speaker from Bravestone that went really well. Usually for the 4th of July we have a BBQ, but as your planning committee for the year, we don’t think a shared food gathering will be very easy while maintaining social distancing and avoiding the spread of germs. Therefore, unfortunately we are not gathering again until after summer break.
The club usually has our first official meeting in September and we are hopeful that will be possible. We are planning to reassess this in August. If in-person meetings will not be happening we will go ahead with some zoom meetings again and do our best to try and keep everyone involved that way, until we can begin in-person meetings again. Hang in there everyone we will get through this together.
Thanks for a great year everyone with lots of fun and some great fundraising for local charities. Stay safe and healthy, have a great summer, and Happy 4th of July!
Hello All, with April meeting canceled and Easter right around the corner we thought it might be fun to post a little baking challenge for any of our members who would like to participate. Have you seen the ‘Nailed It’ challenges on the internet, or the Netflix show by the same name?? We have chosen an April themed cake for everyone to attempt to recreate. You can find the picture below, and also on our Facebook page. Make whatever kind of cake you enjoy to eat and try and decorate it like the picture. When you are finished please send us a picture of your finished product! We would love to hear any challenges you had with recreating it, and if you and your household enjoyed eating it! We will try and get everyone’s photos out for the group to see, and get them up on our Facebook page as well. This is just a fun April challenge so try it anytime this month and then get us your photo!
Hello All! In the best interest of our members and the community as a whole we have decided to cancel our March meeting. We will be keeping a close eye on COVID-19 and will reassess in late April whether we will be having a meeting or canceling that one as well. Remember that March was going to be our Tax talk. Don’t forget during this self-quarantine time to get your Canadian and US taxes filed. Stay safe and healthy everyone.
Thank you to everyone who made last nights fundraiser such a success. We had 38 people attend and we raised $570 for Bravestone Centre. Thank you to Kathy at Winnipeg Art and Wine for all your help through the whole process; and thank you to Jessica and Kelsey who made the night extra special and really fun! Thank you also to Smitty’s in St. Vital for hosting our party and having staff available to serve our large group. Everyone was very excited and had so much fun; with all the positive feedback we are hoping to be able to do a fundraiser like this again next year!
January’s meeting was so much fun. It was a small group who made it out in the cold and we had a blast playing the Canadian edition of Trivial Pursuit. Even though it was a small number who came we ended up with 3 boxes of donations for Bravestone. Thank you so much to everyone who helped by bringing something or sending it along our way.
Our next meeting is February 26th at the Smitty’s in St. Vital. We are having a paint party fundraiser. So many of you have done a great job getting friends and family to sign up with us. There are now only 8 spots left until the party is full. So if you have not signed up yet now is your last chance to go online and grab one of the last tickets.
After a little time off over the holidays we are ready to get going on our meetings again and excited about making this a great 2020. Our January meeting is Wednesday the 22nd at 7:30pm and will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Ft. Garry. It will be game night so get ready to have some fun.
Just a reminder to head over to Winnipeg Art and Wine to sign up for our February meeting. We are having a fundraiser to raise money for Bravestone Centre. Bravestone “provides women and their children affected by domestic violence with the skills to lead a life free of violence through full-time counseling and support programs while living in the safety of our program.” Invite friends and family, everyone will have fun learning to paint with step by step instructions from a professional. Tickets are $40 and we have a limited number of spots so please get your ticket soon! Let’s make this a great fundraiser for a wonderful cause. You can get signed up by following the link bellow and also check out the painting we will be doing ahead of time. https://www.winnipegartandwine.com/portfolio-view/fundraiser-american-womans-club/
Hello, next week is American Thanksgiving. To celebrate the AWC has been doing a salad supper for our November meeting for the last few years. This will take place on November 27th at 6:30pm. Everyone is asked to bring a salad to share.
One of our members, Sharon, will be sharing her story of her around the world trip with her family over the last year.
We are also asking members to please bring a donation for Winnipeg Harvest to the meeting.
See everyone next week and if you can’t make it have a wonderful American Thanksgiving!
Last Wednesdays meeting was great. We had an awesome turn out with 16 members present, including a new American who recently moved to Winnipeg. Our guest speaker on pregnancy and infant loss awareness had a very moving story to share that we all were so fortunate to be able to hear.
Members were asked to bring donations for the Pregnancy Crisis Centre and we collected so many wonderful things! Lots of clothing, diapers and blankets. Thank you to all who donated.
We also gave members a chance to present on a charity they would like our group to donate to this year. We had some wonderful suggestions and are currently doing anonymous voting through email. We will choose 2 charities this year and can’t wait to announce the winners at next months meeting.
Thanks again to everyone who made October’s meeting such fun. See everyone in November.
2 weeks until our next meeting! October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss awareness month. We will have a guest speaker sharing her story of infant loss and her experience with Crisis Pregnancy Centre here in Winnipeg. We are asking members to bring donations for the centre. Diapers (size 4, 5, and 6), formula, baby blankets, baby clothes (size newborn – 2T), and outerwear are a few items the centre needs most. We will also be discussing which other charities we wish to donate to this year, members are asked to bring a suggestion for a charity. We will vote anonymously and announce the winning charity in November.
If you are new to Winnipeg and interested in attending a meeting send us an email and we are happy to share more information.
